EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related legal developments:

  • A federal judge has blocked efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The official stated the action was “a further instance” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Authorization was issued for the dispatch of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the holiday period, coinciding with an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to accept a limited number of individuals from the US in return for additional aid, following signing a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the stripping of the current president’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international actions.
